Michael Martin Memorial Golf Tournament Celebrates 29th Year of Success

MOUNT OLIVE
- The 29th Annual Friendly Mart/Michael Martin Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Thursday, August 18, in memory of NC Highway Patrolman, Michael Martin, a Mount Olive College alumnus who was killed in the line of duty. The event supports student scholarships and the Trojan Club at the University of Mount Olive. 

The tournament which had a total of 200 golfers featured breakfast by Stevens Sausage, silent auction, lunch courtesy of Platinum sponsor McCall's Bar-B-Que & Seafood, and other donations courtesy of many sponsors and supporters. 

 

According to initial reports, this year's tournament proceeds will be around $50,000+ bringing the 29-year total to over $ 690,000.

First flight winners were:  Southeastern Chemical Company/ITG with team members David Devon, Chuck Brown, Glenn Lowe, and Steve Kirchhoff. 


UMO Athletics teams assisted with preparation of the tournament, as well as assisting during the tournament. The Trojan golf teams helped assist with carts, as well as provided drives for players on the first and tenth tees. UMO's women's volleyball team assisted with assembling gift bags and distributing them for participants, while the Trojan's men's soccer team helped load supplies and equipment for the tournament.

 

President Dr. Philip P. Kerstetter stated, "This tournament continues to be tremendously popular among golfers, continuously supported by local businesses, and successfully executed.  We are deeply grateful to tournament director Neil Price and committee members including Dwayne McKay, Bill Clingan, A. N. Martin, Steve Martin, Dean Rouse, Jimmy Adams and all of the vendors and participants that made this event happen."
