Mount Olive, N.C. - Juniors Lindsey Burton and Tai Smith have been named the University of Mount Olive Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Month for the month of October.
A member of the women's golf team, Burton is a Business Administration/Business Management major who holds a 3.63 GPA. Burton is a starter for the UMO women's golf team.
Burton and the Trojans competed in five fall tournaments in preparation for the Spring season. Burton's best finish of the fall was in the first tournament of the season as she tied for first at the Cutter Creek Invitational. She also led the Trojans at the Flagler Fall Slam as she tied for 37th shooting a 137 through two rounds.
A member of the men's cross country/track & field team, Smith is a Psychology major who holds a 3.66 GPA.
Smith was the highest finishing Trojan in three of the four races that Mount Olive has run in this season. He took third at the inaugural Mount Olive Twilight, seventh at the Royal Cross Country Challenge and ninth at the NCAA National Preview Meet. Smith has been named the Conference Carolinas Runner of the Week twice this season and even broke his personal record in the 8K at the Royals XC Challenge.
Scholar-Athlete of the Month winners are nominated by University of Mount Olive faculty members and selected by a committee chaired by UMO math professor and faculty athletics representative Dr. Brenda Cates.
