Lightning Safety Policy -
W&M Athletics uses DTN WeatherSentry Online to monitor the local radar. The meet director will monitor this site. It is the policy of the College of William and Mary that once lightning has struck within 15 miles of the facility (shown on the DTN radar) or lightning is seen from the facility (which ever comes first), then the meet director will direct event staff and make an announcement to clear all spectators, coaches, participants, and event personnel to the closest shelter. The meet director will then continue to monitor the DTN radar and will make the call to continue the event after 30 minutes from the LAST strike of lightning on the DTN radar. In the event of an extreme emergency, a race may be stopped.  Places of shelter include permanent buildings with enclosed walls and roof, as well as personal vehicles.
