Mount Olive Drops Extra Inning Affair to Florida Southern In Series Finale

Mount Olive needed extra frames again in the final game of the series however, they could not manage a rally to overcome Florida Southern College 8-7 Sunday night in non-conference baseball at Scarborough Field in Mount Olive, N.C. Rob Shipman went 2-for-3 at the plate with three walks and an RBI to help to Trojans out offensively.

Florida Southern (11-6) got on the board first by way of the home run ball as Jimmy Correnti hit a long ball to right center.

Mount Olive (12-6) responded in the bottom of the first as Justin Manning got on with a two out walk. Willi Martin was hit by a pitch and moved Manning into scoring position. Shipman scored Manning with a hard hit RBI-single up the middle to tie the game up.

The Trojans added another run in the second but made the fourth inning count. Cody Britt singled to start off the inning and Zak Orrison reached on a fielder's choice but the throw to second to get the speedy Britt was too late and both runners were safe.

DeAndre Allen came through with a single to right field and Britt scored and Allen did advance to second on the throw home. Justin Manning delivered with back-to-back singles and brought home Allen and Orrison. After a foul fly out and a pass ball Manning was on second when Shipman drew the two out walk to put runners at first and second. Chase Edwards found the hole on the left side of the infield and picked up the RBI as Manning scored. Mount Olive carried the 6-2 lead into the fifth.

Florida Southern responded to Mount Olive's four run inning as they put up four runs of their own in the fifth. The scoring summery was highlighted by Chris Dennis' RBI single through the right side as Conor Sczcerba scored. Joey Miller brought home the rest of the Mocs runs with a three-run homerun to left field that scored Dennis and Jimmy Correnti and the game was tied at six.

Florida Southern broke the tie with Miller's sacrifice fly RBI that brought home Keith Curcio who lead off the inning with a double down the right field line.

The Trojans needed to runs to score in the ninth however they needed base runners. Edwards led off the inning with a double over the center fielder's head and Mount Olive had a runner in scoring position with no outs. Tyler Farmer sacrificed him over with bunt and Britt came through with the game-tying base hit as he doubled down the left field line.

However, the Trojans could not get the winning run across and extra innings were required for the second straight game in the series.

Florida Southern put the go ahead run on in the top of the eleventh as Curcio got on by way on the fielder's choice. Curcio stole second one out later and Dennis knocked him in with a single past the diving Orrison and the Moccasins had the lead 8-7.

Mount Olive got the tying run on base but could not get him around as they dropped game three to Florida Southern College.

The Trojans return to the diamond this Wednesday at they will host St. Augustine's University in a single game that was postponed earlier in the season due to weather. First pitch at Scarborough Field is set for 6 p.m.
