Jason Morozowski went 5-for-9 with a home run in game two as the University of Mount Olive picked up double-header wins against Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon in non-conference baseball at Scarborough Field.
Game One Mount Olive 11 Saint Anselm 2:
In game one Mount Olive (3-1) shut down Saint Anselm (0-1) by retiring the side in order. The Trojans quickly got to work in the bottom half as Joe Koehler doubled to the wall in right field. Morozowski moved him to third on a groundout and Kilgore Gailmard singled Koehler home and Mount Olive had broken the game open.
Gailmard then stole second and after a strikeout was sent home on a Stephen Wallace RBI double down the left field line. A groundout ended the threat for any more runs to come across the board.
Kodi Whitley the staring arm for the Trojans kept the Hawks off the board for five innings and received some more run support in single runs in the third and fifth.
Back-to-back singles opened up the sixth for Saint Anselm and with one out Matt Hayden singled through the left side and Matt Flynn scored. Another RBI single brought in the second Hawk run and the deficit was cut to 4-2.
Mount Olive rebounded ad put two runs on the board in the bottom half. Justin Manning doubled to lead off and advanced to third on a groundout. Bretton Gouthro drew a walk and subsequently stole second to put two runners in scoring position. DeAndre Allen plated both Manning and Gouthro on base hit up the middle.
No runs came across in the Hawks seventh Gailmard led off the Trojan seventh with a single up the middle and was followed by a Rob Shipman single through the right side. Chris Leduc pinched hit for Wallace and delivered a RBI double to left. Cody Britt came in to run for Leduc. Manning found the hole between the center and right fielders and scored two on the single.
Manning got caught leaning at first and Brett Lang drew a one out walk. Grant Tyndall came in to pinch hit for Gouthro and after Lang stole second Tyndall walked. A wild pitch and a balk allowed Lang to score. One final run came across on the inning by another wild pitch and Mount Olive's lead had grown to 11-2.
Saint Anselm was able to get a runner as far as third but was unable to score and Mount Olive closed out game one.
Whitley (1-0) picked up his first win on the season after going six complete allowing two runs off six hits and striking out 10. Jesse Schullstrom Cam in relief and pitch the remainder allowing only two hits and punching out two.
Dave Kent (0-1) was on the losing end. Kent went five complete giving up four runs, three earned, off seven hits and three strikeouts.
Game Two Mount Olive 8 Saint Anselm 4
Jason Morozowski went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI to lead the University of Mount Olive offense in game two against Saint Anselm College.
Zak Orrison led off the bottom of the first for Mount Olive (4-1) with a single up the middle and then stole second. Morozowski drew a walk and advanced to second on a drop third strike that also allowed Orrison to take third. Leduc drove in two with a RBI double to center and the Trojans were the first on the scoreboard.
Mount Olive added another run in the bottom of the third off a RBI single by Shipman.
Trojan Starting pitcher Gunnar Kines started the game off on fire not allowing Saint Anselm (0-2) to get into the hit column until the top half of the fourth with two away. Kines quickly punched out the final out and the Hawks were kept off the board.
Mount Olive added some insurance runs in their half of the fifth. Morozowski hit a towering fly ball to the infield and just missed a diving attempt by the second baseman that came all the way across the field to make a play. Morozowski then stole third and Gailmard drew a walk. After Gailmard stole second Shipman doubled down the right field line and scored two. Shipman moved to third on a single by Leduc and scored on the next play off a Manning RBI single.
Down 7-0 the Hawks looked to make a comeback. Bragole singled to lead off the top of the seventh. A walk to Carpenter and Marculitus loaded the bases. The first runs for Saint Anselm came across on a throwing error by the Trojan shortstop and two scored. Matt Flynn flied out to right and a strong throw from Wallace was in time to catch Marculitis at home for a double play. Morrisino singled in a run as McQurrie scored.
Another walk was surrendered by the Trojan pitching staff set up Morrisino to score on a throwing error by the shortstop and Saint Anselm was down 7-4.
The Trojans added an insurance run in the bottom half as Gouthro singled and moved to second on a fielder's choice. An errant throw by the Hawks catcher allowed Gouthro to score and Mount Olive had a four run lead again and did not allow Saint Anselm to score for the remainder of the ball game.
Kines (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. He went six complete allowing just three hits and struck out 10.
Tom Hudson (0-1) picked up the loss going four complete and giving up six runs off nine hits and added six strikeouts.
Mount Olive returns to play the rubber match tomorrow at Scarborough field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
