Mount Olive Completes A Sweep Of Saint Anselm With 8-2 Win Sunday

Bretton Gouthro drove in two runs as the University of Mount Olive completed a three game sweep over Saint Anselm College with a 6-2 win on Sunday at Scarborough Field for non-conference baseball in Mount Olive, N.C. Mount Olive started the game out hot in the first and used solid pitching in the middle to secure the sweep.

Mount Olive (5-1) kept Saint Anselm (0-3) off the board in the first after back-to-back walks were eliminated on a double play. The Trojans came into the first and right off the bat Zak Orrison singled to lead off the inning. After Orrison stole second, Kilgore Gailmard brought Orrison in on an RBI shot past the second baseman. Jason Morozowski and Justin Manning both drew walks and the bases were loaded. Gouthro found a hole on the left side of the infield and plated two as Morozowski and Gailmard came in.

Runners were on the corners and a passed ball allowed Manning to come across as the final run in a four run first inning for the Trojans.

The next inning and a half cruised by as the next nine batters were put out in order and Mount Olive had a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third. Rob Shipman drew a one out walk and advanced to third on a double to the left field wall by Chris Leduc. Manning brought Shipman in on a RBI-single through the right side and the Trojans added another insurance run.

The seventh saw the final run for the Trojans come across as Morozowski scored on a Leduc single past the diving Hawk second baseman and Mount Olive led 8-0.

The Hawks got a runner into scoring position after Ken Morrisino reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and then stole second on the next play. Max Wadington got a bloop single into left and Morrisino scored.

Saint Anselm down 8-1 in the ninth looked to force a bottom half after Joe Morin reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Morin advanced to second after Nick Bragole reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. The Trojans looked to unravel but managed to get two outs before a Paul Trabucco single scored Morin. The one run was all the Hawks could muster as the fell in game three.

Jordy Farthing (1-0) picked up his first win on the season. Farthing went five complete allowing just one hit and struck out four.

Autrey Gates (0-1) was pinned with the loss after two and a thirds pitched. He allowed five runs, four earned, off five hits and struck out two.

Mount Olive returns to Scarborough Field for the final game of this home stand as they host Virginia State University on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
