Trojans Sweep Southern Wesleyan With 9-5 and 9-1 DH Wins

Zak Orrison led the University of Mount Olive to a doubleheader victory and a series sweep of Southern Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon for Conference Carolinas baseball in Central, S.C. The Trojans collected 18 runs in the sweep of the Warriors on Saturday.

Game One: Mount Olive 9 Southern Wesleyan 5

Mount Olive (10-2 Overall, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) exploded to start off game one of the doubleheader. Orrison led off with a single. The bases became loaded after an error and Rob Shipman drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center. Justin Manning followed with another sacrifice fly and the second run came in for the Trojans. A Chirs Leduc single allowed Morozowski to score the third run of the inning. After a walk Joe Koehler cleared the bases with a two out two RBI-triple as Farmer and Leduc scored and Mount Olive had a five run lead going into the bottom of the first.

Southern Wesleyan was kept off the boards until the fifth. A lead-off walk, single and sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. Drew Carson singled in the first run for the Warriors. Jason Moldenhauer and Josh Shimp came up with back-to-back two out singles to give Southern Wesleyan two more runs and make to deficit 5-3.

The Trojans put up three more runs in the sixth. A bases loaded walk to Morozowski pushed in the first run in DeAndre Allen. Shipman hit his second sacrifice fly to score Orrison. Manning singled in the final run as Gailmard scored.

Gailmard made the score 9-3 with a solo home run in the top of the eighth for Mount Olive.

The Warriors responded with a run in the bottom half as Daniel Williams scored on a passed ball.

Mount Olive was one out away from closing game one out, but Drew Carson tripled into left center and Justin Brew scored. Tyler Chappel got the final out of the inning and stopped Southern Wesleyan's attempt to comeback.

Kodi Whitley (3-0) picked up the win for Mount Olive. He went six complete and allowed three runs off six hits and struck out six.

Hamilton Hartsell (0-3) was the losing pitching as he went five complete allowing seven runs off seven hits and struck out one.

Game two: Mount Olive 9 Southern Wesleyan 1

Mount Olive (11-2, 3-0) pushed across the first run of the game in the second off a Brett Lang single into right and Manning scored on the throw.

The Trojans added two runs in the third with a double by Shipman and a follow up single by Manning to score Gailmard and Morozowski.

Derek Justice struck out the Southern Wesleyan (3-8, 0-3) batters in order in the bottom of the third to set up Mount Olive for more offense in the fourth.

Orrison helped the first run come in for Mount Olive in the fourth as he singled and Lang scored on an error by the third baseman. Morozowski brought Orrison home with a two run shot over the outfield wall and the Trojans were ahead 6-0.

Mount Olive scored three more runs in the top of the fifth. Two of the three runs came in off a triple by Orrison. Orrison then scored himself on an error by the shortstop.

The Warriors scored their only run of game in the bottom of the sixth. Shimp doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a ground out. Another groundout scored Shimp and Southern Wesleyan was down 9-1.

Southern Wesleyan in the final set of at bats in the seventh had the bases loaded with one away. Hunter Barnett finished the final two batters off with a strikeout and a ground out and the Trojans swept the Warriors in three games.

Derek Justice (1-0) in his first appearance this season picked up the win. Justice went six complete allowing one run off five hits and struck out three. Barnett pitched an inning of one hit baseball and struck out two.

Tyler Rio (0-2) picked up the loss for Southern Wesleyan. Rio went four innings and allowed six runs, five earned, off seven hits and struck out four.

Mount Olive returns to Scarborough field for a one game match-up with Francis Marion on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
