Rob Shipman and Jason Morozowski led the offence for the University of Mount Olive as the long ball helped the Trojans take a doubleheader sweep of Pfeiffer University 16-6 and 11-0 for Conference Carolinas baseball in Misenheimer, N.C. Monday afternoon. Mount Olive as a team hit four home runs in the doubleheader.
Game One Mount Olive 16 Pfeiffer 6
Shipman led the way for Mount Olive (12-2 Overall 4-0 Conference Carolinas) in the opening inning. Zak Orrison led off the game with a single to the pitcher and moved up to second after Kilgore Gailmard was hit by a pitch. Morozowski reached on a fielder's choice that put out Gailmard at second. Shipman with one away cleared the bases as hit got a hold of a pitch for a three-run home run and put the Trojans up first in game one.
Trojan starting pitcher Kodi Whitley kept Pfeiffer (10-7, 3-1) off the boards in their half of the first.
Mount Olive continued its attack in the second. Joe Koehler singled to the pitcher to lead off. Tyler Farmer reached on a bunt single and moved Koehler to second. Farmer and Koehler moved up to third and second on a wild pitch. After a walk was surrendered to DeAndre Allen, Orrison walked in a run with the bases loaded. Gailmard plated two more on an RBI-double down the right field line. Morozowski scored Orrison on a sacrifice fly to center and Gailmard moved up to third. Shipman scored his four run on a single past the shortstop as Gailmard scored. Shipman moved to second on a Manning single and both runners moved into scoring position after the second wild pitch on the inning.
Chris Leduc grounded out but scored Shipman to make the score 9-0. The Trojans batted around as Koehler came back up and picked up another hit, this time an RBI-single as Manning came in. Allen rounded out the big inning for Mount Olive with an RBI-single into left as Koehler scored.
The Trojans added single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth highlighted by a solo home run by Morozowski in the fifth and single RBI by Orrison in the fourth and sixth.
Pfieffer came up in the bottom of the sixth ready to swing as Zach Scudder singled up the middle to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, Tanner Mathis was hit by a pitch and a groundout moved Mathis to second and Scudder to third. Dylan Goodman drove in the first runs for the Falcons with a two out rbi-double down the right field line and Pfeiffer trailed 15-2.
Mount Olive added more offense in the seventh. Bretton Gouthro came in to pinch hit for Shipman and singled into left with one away. Gouthro quickly came in as Brett Allen pinched hit for Manning and doubled the right center. The Trojans were unable to scratch across any more runs and led 16-2 headed into the bottom half.
The Falcons did not go away easily in the seventh as Damon Smith drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Smith was driven in off a Jordan Eckard double to left and Pfeiffer was still not done. Brett Miller was hit by a pitch and both runners moved into scoring position on a ground out. Chaston Gordon scored the second run on a sacrifice fly to right. The bases were loaded after another hit by pitch to Zac Clinton.
Goodman drove in two more runs with a double to the right centerfield wall and Pfeiffer was down 16-6. The Trojans were finally able to get out of the inning and game one as they took the victory.
Whitley (4-0) picked up the win after six complete innings. He surrendered two runs off five hits and struck out nine.
Ethan Greene (3-2) was credited with the loss. Greene only made it one and two thirds innings giving up 11 runs off eight hits.
Game two Mount Olive 12 Pfeiffer 6
Mount Olive's (13-2, 5-0) bats did not cool off in between games as the Trojans kept the swings coming in game two. Orrison walked to lead off the top of the first and Gailmard move him to third on a single into left field. Morozowski then cleared the bases with his second home run on the day and Mount Olive took an early 3-0 lead. Manning drew a one out walk and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by Leduc. Lang brought in another runner with a groundout as Manning scored the final run in a quick first inning.
The Trojans continued the offensive in the second. Allen reached on a fielding error by the pitcher for a lead-off base runner. Orrison got on via a bunt single and both runners came home on a Gailmard double to left field. Morozowski added another RBI with back-to-back doubles as he scored Gailmard. Morozowski moved over to third on a ground out and was brought home as Manning got a hold of a pitch and put it over the wall for a two run shot and Mount Olive was up 9-0.
Mount Olive added two runs in the third off groundouts by Gailmard and Morozowski.
Pfeiffer (10-8, 3-2) struck for the Falcons first run in the bottom of the fourth off a solo home run from I Perez. The Trojans responded with a run in the top of the fifth and made the ball game 12-1.
The Falcons had their largest offensive outburst in the bottom of the fifth. C McGraw singled home Pfeiffer's first run off the inning. Scudder with two runners on cleared the bases with a three run home run to left field.
In the bottom of the sixth Eckard added another run for Pfeiffer with a solo home run and Mount Olive's lead was cut to six.
Jose Serrano came in the game in the ninth and closed the door as he sat down the Falcons down in order.
Gunnar Kines (4-0) was the winning pitcher for Mount Olive throwing eight complete innings. Kines gave up six runs off 11 hits and struck out 14. Serrano pitched a perfect inning in closing out game two finishing with two strikeouts.
Keith Little (2-2) picked up the loss after not making it out of the second. He gave up seven runs, six earned, and struck out two.
Mount Olive heads to Lenoir-Rhyne tomorrow to take on the Bears in Hickory, N.C. Game time on Tuesday is set for 6 p.m.
