Trojans Hold Off St. Augustine's For 6-2 Win Wednesday

Kilgore Gailmard had a key hit in a four run sixth inning to propel the No. 20 University of Mount Olive to a 6-2 win over Saint Augustine's University Wednesday night in Cary, N.C. the site to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Mount Olive (21-9) went in order to start off the game and opened it up for Saint Augustine's (11-16) to take the lead in the second. A lead-off double put the Falcons in scoring position to start the second. Darryl Hardy-Washington grounded out and brought home Garcia for the game's first run.

The Trojans answered in the top of the third and Bretton Gouthro reached on an error by the shortstop. DeAndre Allen used a sacrifice bunt to move Gouthro to second and he stole third on the next pitch. Zak Orrison grounded out to short and picked up the RBI as Gouthro came in to tie the game.

In the fourth inning Justin Manning led off the inning with a walk. Joe Koehler reached on an error by the second baseman and allowed the runners to take second and third. Rob Shipman also reached on an error to load the bases. Brett Lang was hit by a pitch and walked in the first run of the inning. Gouthro drove a ball out to left and was deep enough to allow Koehler to tag up and score. Allen came up next and singled to reload the bases. Kilgore Gailmard stepped up with two outs and drove a ball back up the middle and Lang and Shipman came in to give Mount Olive a 5-1 lead.

Lang added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI-single to left to score Koehler.

After an up and down eighth inning the Falcons looked to resurge and come back in the ninth. Tyson McDonald walked to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a passed ball and Darrell Langston walked. Timothy Carter reached on an error and the bases were loaded. After a strikeout, Corey Brassington drew a walk to bring in a run. One run was all the Falcons could get as the door was shut on the last two out and Mount Olive took the game.

Jose Serrano (3-1) picked up the win in relief as he went one and two thirds. He surrendered one walk and picked up one strikeout.

Mount Olive will hit the road this weekend as the Trojans head to Due West, S.C. to take on Erskine College in a three game series to begin Friday April 3. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday.
