Trojans Take Two From Southern Wesleyan

University of Mount Olive defeated Southern Wesleyan University 8-4, 7-0 in Conference Carolinas baseball at Scarborough Field in Mount Olive, N.C. Stephen Wallace led the Trojans with a two run homerun in game one.

Game One: Mount Olive 8 Southern Wesleyan 4

Mount Olive (11-10 Overall, 5-5 Conference Carolinas) wasted no time getting the offense going in the bottom half of the first. Zak Orrison led off the game with a walk and then stole second. Orrison moved up to third on groundout. Joe Koehler walked and also followed Orrison as he stole second.

Brett Lang drove home the game's first runs as his RBI-Double down the right field line plated Orrison and Koehler. Wallace unloaded on a pitch and cleared the bases with a shot over the left centerfield wall and Mount Olive led 4-0.

Southern Wesleyan (10-16, 2-8) was able to strike for a run in the top of the third off a RBI-single by Conner Ewing.

The Trojans however answered back in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Duke Hill.

The lead continued to grow in the sixth as Orrison got on with a one out single. After Orrison stole second, Jack Sherrill singled into center and Orrison scored on the play and Sherrill took second on the throw. Koehler came up next and singled to the third baseman deep in the hole and beat the throw, however an errant throw to first allowed Sherrill to score.

Both teams exchanged runs in the seventh and eighth innings respectively to bring the lead to 8-3.

Southern Wesleyan tried to make a run in the final set of at bats. DiMarkus Sanders singled with one away to get the Warriors started. Luke Hostetler reached on a fielding error by the left fielder as the ball was dropped and both runners moved to third and second. Matt Costa brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to right as Sanders tagged up and scored. One run was all the Warriors could get as a strikeout ended the ballgame and Mount Olive took game one.

Brighton Hudson (3-1) picked up the win as he went seven complete and allowed two runs; one earned off nine hits and struck out four.

Tyler Rio (2-4) for Southern Wesleyan was pinned with the loss as he went five complete allowed five runs; four earned, off six hits and struck out one.

Game Two: Mount Olive 7 Southern Wesleyan 0

Just as in game one Mount Olive (12-10, 6-5) got started in the bottom of the first. Lang picked up a two out base hit to give the Trojans a base runner. Lang proceeded to steal second and Wallace drew a walk. Koehler cleared the bases with a triple into the right field corner as Wallace and Lang scored. Derek Deler added another run as her singled past the Warrior shortstop and Koehler came home to give Mount Olive a 3-0 lead.

Sherrill added a solo run in the second to bring in Nate Estes, who singled to lead off the inning.

Mount Olive kept the shutout in effect as three more runs came across in the fifth and the Trojans swept the doubleheader.

Bruce Zimmerman (4-1) threw the shutout as he went the distance and allowed just four hits and struck out nine.

J.J. Julian (1-3) went six complete in the loss as he allowed seven runs off eight hits and struck out one.

Mount Olive will have a quick turnaround as with impending weather forecasted for Saturday afternoon, the Trojans will play the final game of the series at 9:30 a.m. at Scarborough Field.
