Trojans Drop Series Finale To Erskine 1-0

University of Mount Olive fell in the series finale to Erskine College 1-0 at Scarborough Field Saturday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.

Mount Olive (15-13 Overall, 8-7 Conference Carolinas) was held without a hit until the bottom of the fourth as David Mayo picked up a one out single. Back-to-back walks to Brett Lang and Joe Koehler loaded the bases with one away. The Trojans threatened, but a fly out registered the second out and Mayo was caught off the bag during the play for the final out of the inning.

Erskine (25-10, 12-3) got their offense started in the top of the fifth. Chaz Davey singled to lead off the inning. Destin Nichols moved Davey up to second with a sacrifice bunt. Tyler Phillips drove in the ballgame's only run as he doubled down the left field line and Davey came in to score.

The rest of the ballgame remained a pitcher's duel as neither team could stretch across another run.

Austin Hutchison (4-2) took the loss on the hill for Mount Olive as he surrendered one run off seven hits and stuck out 10 over his nine complete innings.

Alex Calvert (5-1) picked up the win for Erskine as he too went the distance allowing five hits and struck out eight.

Mount Olive will hit the road as the Trojans travel down to Florence, S.C. to take on the Patriots of Francis Marion Tuesday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
