University of Mount Olive defeated Chowan University 16-2 Wednesday afternoon at Scarborough Field in non-conference baseball. Zak Orrsion led the offense with five RBI in the game. Orrison also tied the all-time stolen base record in the second inning.
Mount Olive (24-17) was kept quiet in the bottom of the first inning, but, could not be contained in the second. Stephen Wallace led off the inning with a double down the left field line. David Mayo drew a walk and Joe Koehler attempted to sacrifice his at bat with a bunt. The bunt was placed down the third base line and Koehler was able to beat the throw and the bases were loaded.
Derek Deler singled in the first run with an RBI base hit into right. Ricky Surum followed with another RBI-single into center and scored Mayo. After a Strikeout Orrison drove in two more runs on a fielder's choice. An errant throw by the Chowan (22-22) third baseman allowed two runs to come in and put runners on the corners with one away.
Orrison then stole second and with the swipe tied the all-time stolen base record with 102. Jack Sherrill scored another run with an RBI-single to right and Surum scored. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Orrison scored. The Final run of the inning came in off the bat of Brett Lang. Lang picked up an RBI-single through the left side and Mount Olive jumped out to big lead 7-0.
Chowan was unable to put together much offence to counter the Trojans' production as Mount Olive went on to score four runs in the third and fourth innings. The Hawks could muster only two solo runs in the game and Mount Olive closed out the short two game series with a win.
Ethan Horne (1-1) picked up his first win on the season as he went six complete innings, allowing just one unearned run off six hits and struck out three. Trey Pate and Nick Mason closed out the game by not allowing an earned run.
Mount Olive has a short rest before the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College come to Scarborough Field Friday and Saturday for a three game Conference Carolinas series. Game one Friday is set for 6 p.m.
