Lakeland, Fla. --- The University of Mount Olive baseball team split a pair of games in Lakeland, Florida on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE

  • Mount Olive took control from the first inning as Jack Sherrill worked a lead-off walk and teammate David Mayo came up to give UMO a 2-0 lead with a home run to left.
  • Florida Southern tied the game with solo runs in the fourth and sixth. 
  • The turning point for the Trojans came in the top of the seventh. Sherrill came through again for the Trojans with a two RBI-single to center. Zach Mozingo cleared the bases two batters later with a three-run home run.
  • Gunner Tolston capped off the inning with a solo home run to right, as the Trojans put six runs across and led 8-2.
  • UMO pushed across four more runs in the top of the eighth and picked up the win.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Austin Hutchison (2-0) took the win on the mound as he went six complete, allowing two runs off five hits and struck out six.
  • Tolston led the Trojans as he went 2-2 with three RBI.
  • Mayo and Mozingo also contributed three RBI.

GAME TWO

  • Mount Olive started off game two just as they did in the first game of the day by taking the lead early. Carson McCrudy singled through the right side in the bottom of the first driving in David Mayo and Jack Sherrill and the Trojans went up 2-0. 
  • Delta State answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third to tie the game and took the lead 3-1 after pushing across the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth.
  • UMO responded again by scoring two runs in the bottom half as Gunner Tolston homered don the right field line and Mayo had an RBI-triple and Mount Olive regained the lead 4-3.
  • The Statesmen found the big inning as they went on to push home four runs in the top of the sixth.
  • Mount Olive did tie the game 8-8 with three runs in the bottom of the eighth but allowed Delta State to take the lead in the top of the ninth and were unable to rally back.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Ricky Surum (1-3) led the offense for Mount Olive collecting three RBI.
