Misenheimer, N.C. --- The 5th-ranked University of Mount Olive took the final two games of the series to sweep Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas baseball on Saturday afternoon in Misenheimer, N.C.

GAME ONE

  • Mount Olive struck early in the top of the second as Jose Lopez singled into right center allowing Zach Mozingo to score for the opening run of the game.
  • Pfeiffer tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single, but UMO bounced back on a Trae Sweeting solo home run in the third.
  • The Falcons were not able to find an answer for the Trojan lead until the bottom of the seventh with two away when Pfeiffer picked up a base hit to tie the game at two. The final out of the seventh was recorded and the game went into extra innings.
  • After the eighth inning went by without a hit from either side the ninth inning proved to be the final.
  • Alvin Swoope worked out a walk with one away to give Mount Olive a base runner. Sweeting came up with two outs and delivered a single into right pushing Swoope to third.
  • Ricky Surum gave the Trojans the lift they needed with a home run to left center and UMO had a 5-2 lead.
  • Zach Mozingo came in to close out the bottom of the ninth as he retired the Falcons in order to pick up the save.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Austin Hutchison (7-0) took the win on the mound as he went eight complete surrendering two runs off seven hits, striking out five, and surrendering three walks.
  • Surum led the team with three RBI in his five plate appearances. 

GAME TWO

  • Mount Olive fell behind in the bottom of the first as Pfeiffer used a two-run home run to take an early lead.
  • Justin Carroll's two-run RBI-double and Swoope's RBI-single in the second pushed UMO ahead for the first time in game two 3-2.
  • Pfeiffer tied the game in the bottom of the second, but Mount Olive's Drew Ellis pushed the Trojans back in front. A bases loaded walk from Justin Lee gave UMO a 5-3 lead. 
  • Both teams exchanged single runs in the bottom of the third and top of the fourth but Mount Olive held onto a 6-4 lead heading into the top of the fifth.
  • The Trojans extended their lead by pushing across 11 runs over the next three innings.
  • The Falcons scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh but UMO held Pfeiffer to just that as they took game two 17-10.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Brighton Hudson (4-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Trojans as he went four and a third allowing five runs, off eight hits, striking out two, and allowing two free passes.
  • Tony Salvaggio led the Trojans with four RBI including a three-run home run.
