How It Happened
Game 1: Play-by-Play
Game 2: Play-by-Play

GAME ONE

  • Mount Olive entered game one of the doubleheader in a stalemate as neither team's offenses could get much of anything going for the first three innings. NGU threatened in the top of the third with runners at the corners, but the Trojans struck out the final batter and the game remained scoreless.
  • The game remained deadlocked heading into the final at-bats for the Trojans in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Zach Mozingo singled with one away to give UMO a baserunner. Jose Lopez then moved Mozingo into scoring position with an infield groundout.
  • Drew Ellis then came up with the clutch two-out RBI-single as Mozingo slid in safely at home and Mount Olive walked off with the 1-0 victory.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Austin Hutchison (8-0) took the win on the mound as he went the distance holding North Greenville to just five hits while striking out seven Crusaders.
  • Ellis led the team with a 2-for-2 outing at the plate with the key walk-off RBI base hit.

GAME TWO

  • Mount Olive fell behind in the top of the second in game two as North Greenville struck for a run off an RBI-single by Andrew Plunkett.
  • The Crusaders held the Trojans at bay for the next three innings as NGU added a second run off a Clark Scolamiero solo home run in the top of the sixth and led 2-0.
  • UMO found the answer in the bottom of the sixth as the Trojans first three batters, Mozingo, Lopez, and Ellis all reached base to start off the inning.
  • A wild pitch from the North Greenville pitcher allowed all three runners to advance including Mozingo who put UMO on the scoreboard as the Trojans trailed 2-1.
  • David Mayo then drew a walk to reload the bases and following a fielder's choice, UMO had Mayo at second, Ellis at third, and Tony Salvaggio at first.
  • Justin Carroll flew out to right allowing Ellis to score the tying run. However, on the play an errant throw from the Crusaders' right fielder allowed Mayo to score on the throwing error to give Mount Olive a 3-2 lead.
  • The Trojans went on to add a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to expand their lead to 7-3.
  • Despite allowing two NGU hits in the top of the ninth Mount Olive shut the door in the final frame to pick up the game three win and a series sweep of the Crusaders.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Brighton Hudson (5-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Trojans as he went seven and two-thirds, allowing three runs, off five hits, striking out four, and allowing one free pass.
  • Zach Mozingo (S8) picked up the save as he pitched the final inning and a third giving up two hits and struck out three.
