Belmont, N.C. --- No. 1 University of Mount Olive split the final two game of the series 2-1, 11-6 against Belmont Abbey College in Conference Carolinas baseball on Saturday afternoon in Belmont, N.C.

GAME ONE

  • The doubleheader opened in a pitching duel as neither team could get a runner past second for the first three innings.
  • Mount Olive had a good opportunity to strike for the first run of the game in the fourth as the Trojans were able to load the bases off three walks with two outs, but a flyout ended the threat and the game remained scoreless.
  • Belmont Abbey found the opening run as the Crusaders made Mount Olive pay for walking the lead-off batter as Rosenbaum scored on a fielder's choice by Caden Krouse.
  • UMO was up against the wall as the Trojans were down to their final set of at-bats in the top of the seventh.
  • Alvin Swoope was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Trae Sweeting moved Swoope into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.
  • After a flyout, UMO was down to its final out and Drew Ellis did not waste it as he lifted a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield wall for a two-run home run and the Trojans took the lead 2-1.
  • The Crusaders had runners on first and second with only one out, but Mount Olive found the game-winning double play to end the bottom of the seventh and take game one.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Austin Hutchison (9-0) took the win on the mound as he went the distance allowing one unearned run off five hits and the senior struck out seven.
  • Ellis had what would be the game-winning hit as he led the team with the only RBI of the game as he went 2-for-2 with a walk in his three plate appearances. 

GAME TWO

  • Mount Olive came out firing in game two in the first inning. Ricky Surum got on base with a one-out double to give UMO a runner in scoring position.
  • Ellis doubled as well to score Surum and UMO took the 1-0 lead.
  • Jose Lopez drew a walk and Zach Mozingo drove in Ellis from second to add to the Trojans' lead.
  • David Mayo singled through the left side and scored both Mozingo and Lopez and Mount Olive led 4-0.
  • Back-to-back base hits in the bottom of the first allowed the Crusaders to chip back a run as they trailed 4-1 after the first inning.
  • BAC took the lead in the second as the Crusaders pushed four runs home off three hits and took the lead 5-4.
  • The Crusaders pushed two more runs home in the bottom of the fourth on two straight bases loaded walks.
  • Another Drew Ellis home run brought the deficit to 7-5.
  • BAC however again had an answer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Mount Olive only managed one more run in the top of the sixth as the Trojans could not make the comeback as they fell 11-6 in game two.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Brighton Hudson (5-1) was pinned with the loss on the mound for the Trojans as could not make it past the second allowing five runs off five hits.
  • Ellis and Mayo both led the team with two RBI.
