Mount Olive, N.C. --- The top-ranked University of Mount Olive took a doubleheader victory over Limestone College, 7-1 & 8-3, at Scarborough Field in Conference Carolinas baseball action Friday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME ONE

  • Mount Olive fell behind early as Limestone blasted a solo lead-off home run to begin the game.
  • Jose Lopez answered for UMO in the bottom of the first as he tripled down the right field line scoring Drew Ellis to tie the game.
  • The Trojans took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Alvin Swoope and Trae Sweeting plated three runs to push Mount Olive up 4-1.
  • The bottom of the seventh saw the Trojans again add three more runs with an RBI-single by Tony Salvaggio and a Saints error that allowed two to score.
  • Mount Olive went on to hold Limestone to just the one run taking game one 7-1.

KEY STATS GAME 1

  • Bruce Zimmermann (9-1) took the win on the mound as the senior gave up one run off two hits and struck out nine.
  • Senior Kodi Whitley made his first appearance since 2015, after undergoing Tommy John surgery and pitched a complete inning surrendering two hits and striking our three.
  • Four Trojans finished with a RBI in game one, Lopez, Salvaggio, Swoope, and Sweeting.

GAME TWO

  • Mount Olive took control from the start in the second game. Zach Mozingo doubled to lead off the bottom of the first and two pitches later, Drew Ellis took a pitch over the left field wall to give UMO a 2-0 lead. David Mayo later in the inning singled past second to score Ellis from second. Jack Sherrill followed with a two RBI-single to center and the Trojans led 5-0.
  • Three more runs came in during the second on the bats of Ricky Surum, Ellis, and Jason Smith, who all recorded a RBI to give Moun Olive an 8-0 lead.
  • Limestone answered in the fourth taking advantage of a Trojan error that allowed two runs to score and bring the UMO lead to 8-2.
  • Only one more run came home in the game for the Saints and Mount Olive took the 8-3 win.

KEY STATS GAME 2

  • Austin Hutchison (11-0) picked up the win as he went five complete allowing two unearned runs and struck out eight.
  • Ethan Horne (S: 2) came in to get the save as he pitched an inning and a third allowing two hits and striking out three.
  • Surum led the team with three RBI in game two.

Mount Olive will wrap up the three-game series with Limestone tomorrow with a single nine-inning contest at Scarborough Field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. It will also be senior day for Zach Mozingo, Austin Hutchison, David Mayo, Jesse Schullstrom, Jason Smith, Ricky Surum, Alvin Swoope, and Bruce Zimmermann.
