No. 1 Mount Olive Takes Down Erskine 9-2 In Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament

Elon, N.C. --- The top-ranked University of Mount Olive escaped elimination defeating Erskine College, 9-2, in the first elimination game of the Conference Carolinas baseball tournament Friday afternoon in Elon, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive took the lead first after the first two innings ended in a stalemate. Zach Mozingo doubled to right to lead off the top of the third. Ricky Surum then worked out a walk and the bat of Drew Ellis gave UMO a 3-0 lead after a shot off the batter's eye in center field.
  • The bottom of the third saw one Erskine run score off a base hit down the right field line to trim the UMO lead to two.
  • The Trojans continued to attack in the top of the fourth adding to their lead with an RBI-single by Jose Lopez and two runs scoring on an error as the Mount Olive lead expanded to 6-0.
  • Erskine came up with an answer in the bottom of the fifth pushing a single run across on a base hit to right center.
  • UMO took advantage of three Flying Fleet errors in the top of the eighth and drove in two more runs to move out to an 8-2 advantage.
  • The Trojans tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the ninth and held Erskine off the boards in the bottom half to escape elimination and remain alive in the conference tournament.

KEY STATS

  • Austin Hutchison (12-0) went the distance allowing two runs, one earned, off 10 hits, two walks, and struck out five in his nine-inning victory.
