Greensboro, N.C. --- The top-ranked University of Mount Olive escaped elimination defeating Belmont Abbey College, 6-1, in the fifth elimination game of the Conference Carolinas baseball tournament Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. Mount Olive, after defeating Belmont Abbey will take on the Crusaders again Monday for the Conference Carolinas Championship.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive took the early momentum after Zach Mozingo led off the game with a double to right center. Drew Ellis came up one out later and gave UMO the lead with a two-run home run to left and the Trojans led 2-0.
  • Justin Carroll added another run for Mount Olive in the top of the second as he led off the inning with a solo home run to left.
  • The Trojans continued to attack in the top of the fifth. Zach Mozingo added to the UMO cushion with a home run to right giving Mount Olive a 4-0 lead. Carroll picked up his second RBI of the night with a single to left that scored Ricky Surum.
  • Belmont Abbey struck for a run in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly and drew the deficit to 5-1.
  • UMO pushed home an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Ellis led off the inning with a double and following a sacrifice bunt by Jose Lopez, Ellis scored on a sacrifice fly from David Mayo.
  • The Crusaders got a lead-off base runner in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to push across a run as Mount Olive held on for the 6-1 victory.

KEY STATS

  • German Reyes (1-0) picked up the win in his first start on the mound as he went the distance allowing one run off five hits and struck out six.
  • Drew Ellis and Justin Carroll both led the team with two RBI performances at the plate.
