GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive was not able to plate a run until the second inning when Jose Lopez drove in Justin Carroll with an RBI-single for the first run of the game.
  • The third inning saw the visiting Trojans explode for six runs as Jon Cosme started the inning with a lead-off single up the middle. Nate Estes then moved Cosme to third with a single to right center.
  • Drew Ellis cleared the bases four pitches later to move UMO ahead 3-0.
  • A Barton pitching change did not stop the Trojan attack as Carroll singled on the third pitch of his at-bat. 
  • Mount Olive then made more trouble for the Bulldogs as JT Stone and Lopez both worked out a walk to force a bases-loaded run home and extend the lead to four.
  • Trae Sweeting scored the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly and UMO led 7-0 after two and a half innings.
  • UMO added four runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by RBI base hits by Lopez and Gunner Tolston.
  • Barton prevented themselves from being shutout as they scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth to decrease the deficit to 11-1 after five.
  • Mount Olive countered with two runs in the top of the sixth and Barton answered with a single run in the bottom half. 
  • The two teams continued to exchange runs over the next two innings with the Trojans holding a 16-4 lead following the final out in the eighth.
  • Due to darkness, the game was called following the eighth inning and the Trojans defeated the Bulldogs in game one of the series.

KEY STATS

  • Brighton Hudson (2-1) got the win on the mound as he allowed two runs, off five hits in his six innings of work and struck out nine while allowing three walks.
  • Gunner Tolston led the Trojans going 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.
  • Jose Lopez and Trae Sweeting also contributed three RBI to the Trojans attack.
