Trojans Fall To Top-Seed North Greenville But Stay Alive In Conference Tournament

TIGERVILLE, S.C. --- No. 3 seeded University of Mount Olive Trojans fell to the No. 1 seed North Greenville Crusaders 13-8 in game seven of the Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship Tournament Saturday morning.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive came out of the gate hot with Gunner Tolston getting a double down the right field line and Junior Snow followed with an RBI-single to right and gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
  • North Greenville came back in the bottom of the first pushing home three runs on an RBI-single, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 lead after one complete.
  • The Trojans fought back to push home a run in the top of the second when Tolston scored Nate Estes on a sacrifice fly and the deficit went down to 3-2.
  • Once again the Crusaders came back to put another three-spot in the bottom of the second and pushed the lead out to four.
  • James Smibert answered the call for Mount Olive in the fourth with an RBI-single to push home a single run and make the deficit 6-3.
  • Once again NGU forced home another three-runs in the fifth to push out the Crusader lead to six.
  • North Greenville added another pair of runs in the sixth and made their lead double digits and the advantage eight, 11-3, after six complete.
  • JT Stone belted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to help bring in the score a bit closer at 5-11, but there was a lot of work still to do. 
  • Again the Crusaders came back to push home two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Mount Olive had one final shot in the top of the ninth and got two lead-off runners on base as Jack Casbarro and Logan Welch reached on a hit by pitch and a walk to set up another clutch pinch hit appearance.
  • Coy Barnett came up off the bench and cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right to draw the deficit to 13-8.
  • The Trojans, however, were unable to get anymore runner on base and fell.

KEY STATS

  • Caleb Irwin (5-2) was pinned with the loss as he only made it one complete allowing five runs and struck out one.
  • Coy Barnett led the team with three RBI off the bench with his home run.
