Early Run Propels Regionally Third-Ranked Trojans Past Pfeiffer 96-58

Kendall Hargrove led five players in double figures with 20 points and came within one rebound of his second double-double of the season as regionally third-ranked and national poll vote-getter University of Mount Olive defeated Pfeiffer 96-58 in the Trojans' Conference Carolinas men's basketball opener. Mount Olive was the 28th highest vote-getter in the D2SIDA National Top 25 Poll.

Dontrell Brite and John Wieland hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions early in the first half to give Mount Olive (3-0 overall, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. Mount Olive never trailed in the contest as Dominique Reed's layup with 12:11 remaining in the first half completed a 21-3 run that broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Trojans a 25-7 lead.

The margin surpassed the 20-point mark after Jordan McCain's three-pointer and JaQuan Blount's fastbreak basket extended the Trojans' lead to 30-9 with 10:08 left before halftime. Mount Olive held Pfeiffer (1-1, 0-1) to single digits for more than 10 minutes until Keith Jumper's layup with 9:04 remaining put the Falcons in double figures. McCain answered with another three to give the Trojans a 35-11 advantage.

Brite helped push the margin to 30 points with 90 seconds left, following a three-pointer with a four-point play to give Mount Olive a 52-22 lead. Blount's dunk just before the buzzer off of Reed's steal gave Mount Olive its biggest lead of the half at 56-23 at the break.

The margin never fell below 25 points in the second half and the lead ballooned to 40 points at 92-52 in the final minutes of the game.

Brite finished with 17 points and dished out eight assists for the second straight game. McCain scored 11 points, while Blount and Mike Moore added 10 points apiece.

A.J. Clark led Pfeiffer with 12 points.

Mount Olive plays host to the 49th Annual Pickle Classic this weekend at Kornegay Arena. The Trojans face Virginia State Friday and Bluefield State Saturday. Tip-off both nights is 7:30 p.m.
