Wilson, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team saw its late run fall short in an 80-74 loss to Barton College in Conference Carolinas action on Wednesday night in Wilson, N.C.

FIRST HALF

  • Mount Olive jumped out to a 13-8 lead with 14:37 left in the opening half on a 6-0 Trojan run capped off by back-to-back layups by freshman Cameron Robinson.
  • The Trojans' lead ballooned to eight at 20-12 on the heels of a pair of dunks and a made free throw by freshman Armond Griebe.
  • After UMO pushed its lead to its largest point at nine with 9:51 remaining in the period, Barton pushed back on a 19-9 run to tie the game at 39 heading into halftime.

SECOND HALF

  • The Bulldogs extended their run with an 8-0 spurt in the first 2:11 of the second half, taking a 47-39 lead.
  • With 11:28 remaining in the game, Barton's lead grew to its largest point at 11 at 58-47 on a tip-in by Miguel Brown off of a missed layup.
  • The Trojans battled back within two at 62-60 on a layup by freshman Tyler Thomas with 7:55 left on the clock.
  • Responding with a 10-2 run, Barton jumped back ahead by double digits at 72-62 with 4:22 left to play.
  • Once again, UMO had a run in it that chopped Barton's advantage to four on two occasions in the final 1:03 as a pair of free throws by sophomore Jamaal Matin trimmed the Trojans' deficit to 74-70 with 38 tick remaining on the clock.
  • A three by junior Tayon Gleaves pushed Mount Olive within one possession at 76-73 with 28 seconds left in the game, but the Bulldogs knocked down free throws down the stretch to secure the 80-74 win.

KEY STATS

  • Matin led the Trojans with a career-high 23 points while adding six rebounds and three steals.
  • Also in double figures for UMO were Gleaves (17) and freshman Saiquan Jamison (10).
  • UMO was outshot by Barton, 53.6% to 46.8%, and was outrebounded by the Bulldogs, 37-23.
  • The Trojans took care of the ball in the contest, committing just nine turnovers on the night and forcing the Bulldogs into 17 giveaways.
