Trojans Remain Atop The Conference Standings With 77-66 Win Over Warriors

CENTRAL, S.C. – The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team picked up their third Conference Carolinas victory coming back from a 14-point deficit to win by 11 points, 77-66, over the Southern Wesleyan Warriors at Tysinger Gymnasium in Central, S.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST HALF

  • Sophomore Alan Treakle put the Trojans on the board first on a fast-break a layup following his own steal and completed the three-point play by making his and-one free throw to give UMO a 3-0 lead at the 17:52 mark of the opening half.
  • Southern Wesleyan knotted the score at five all following a 5-2 run as the clock tick towards 15 minutes.
  • The score knotted up once more at seven each before the Warriors went on an 8-2 over the course of four minutes to take a 15-9 lead over the Trojans.
  • UMO pulled within four points, 18-14 following a pair of free throws by Jamaal Matin and a three-pointer by Jonathan Mebane near the eight-minute mark.
  • A 15-3 run by SWU put the Warriors ahead by 16 points, 33-17, before a dunk by Don Pigford off the assist from Matin staled the Warrior run.
  • The Trojans scored seven points to the Warriors six as Southern Wesleyan road a 39-28 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF

  • The Warriors held on to a double-digit lead through the first six minutes of the second half with as many as 14 points separating the two squads.
  • A pair of made free throws by Matin at 13:27 on the clock (50-38) kick-started a Mount Olive run that evaporated the Southern Wesleyan lead as the Trojans took a 54-53 (7:02) lead following an 18-3 rally.
  • UMO continued to pull ahead and saw themselves up nine points, 66-57, following another dunk by Pigford at 2:56.
  • In the last several minutes of the game, the Trojans led an 11-9 run to win by 11 points with the final score sitting at 77-66.

KEY STATS

  • Alan Treakle led the Trojans with 16 points including going 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
  • Senior Jamaal Matin and sophomore Don Pigford were just behind with 15 points each. Both Matin and Pigford tied for the team lead in rebounds with 11 each.
  • Matin also had an impressive 7-of-10 record from the free throw line as the Trojans as a team shot 80% going 24-of-30 at the line.
