MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Mount Olive Trojans defeated the Flying Fleet of Erskine College 62-57 on Tuesday evening in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action at Belk Arena in Due West, S.C.

FIRST HALF

  • Michael Brown got the scoring started but the Flying Fleet responded by going point for point as the teams sat tied at six all at the 15:36 mark.
  • Erskine opened a five-point lead, 13-8, following a 7-2 run but the Trojans answered with an 8-0 run of their own to take a three-point, 16-13 lead with 11:24 remaining in the opening half.
  • UMO held a four-point 20-16 lead with 9:46 on the clock, but Erskine led an 8-4 run to knot the score at 24 all with the clock approaching five minutes.
  • The squads traded points and the lead a couple of times before Mount Olive took a five-point lead 33-28 after Darius Spragley hit a three-pointer, but Erskine scored last putting the score at 33-30 at the buzzer.

SECOND HALF

  • Erskine began the second half on an 11-2 run that spanned seven minutes as the Fleet led 41-35 as the clock fell under 13 minutes.
  • Jamaal Matin scored four free throws and Cameron Robinson knocked back a three to give the Trojans a slim 42-41 lead following a 7-0 run.
  • Over the next five minutes, the squads traded the lead five times before Mount Olive connected on a layup from Don Pigford and a three from Spragley to lead 54-50 with 3:51 left.
  • The Flying Fleet pulled within a point, 58-57, following a 7-4 run but the Trojans closed out the game with four free throws from Spragley to hold off Erskine and win 62-57.
