MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Mount Olive Trojans defeated the Flying Fleet of Erskine College 80-66 on Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Championship Tournament at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST HALF

  • Erskine scored the first points of the game on a pair of free throws at the 18:55 mark to get the scoring going. 
  • Less than 20 seconds later, Jamaal Matin responded with a three-point jumper that gave the Trojans 3-2 lead, however, the Flying Fleet hit a three of their own to take a 5-3 lead at the 18:17 mark.
  • UMO responded with a 6-0 run to take a 9-5 advantage following a Darius Spragley three as the clock ticked under 16 minutes to play.
  • Erskine went on a 12-2 rally over the next four minutes that put them up six points over the Trojans, 17-11, but a 10-2 run by Mount Olive gave the Green and White a 21-19 lead with 9:51 on the clock.
  • Three consecutive free throws by the Flying Fleet gave them a one-point lead, 22-21, but UMO responded with a 9-2 run that gave the Trojans their own six-point lead over the Fleet, 30-24.
  • The final six minutes of the opening half saw the teams trade baskets with Mount Olive leading an 8-7 run into halftime up 38-31.

SECOND HALF

  • The Flying Fleet scored five quick points right out of halftime but a three-pointer by Matin and a three-point conversion on the and-one free throw opportunity by Cameron Robinson halted the Erskine run and put UMO up 44-36 at the 18-minute mark.
  • Erskine cut Mount Olive's lead to just two points, 44-42, following back-to-back three-pointers as the clock neared 15 minutes remaining.
  • UMO opened up a 10-point lead following an 8-0 run that included a layup by Robinson and back-to-back threes from Jonathan Mebane to put the score at 52-42.
  • The Trojans took an 18-point lead, 64-46, after UMO went on a 12-4 rally as the clock hit 8:24 remaining.
  • Over the next six minutes, the Flying Fleet cut the Trojan lead down to nine points, 70-61, but Mount Olive closed out the game on a 10-5 run to win 80-66.

Mount Olive will travel to Franklin Springs, Ga., where the semifinals and championship games will be played. No. 1 seeded Emmanuel, after defeating Lees-McRae, earned the hosting honors as the highest seed remaining in the tournament. Mount Olive will play the host school on Saturday, March 9, at 2 p.m., following the Conference Tournament brunch at which the 'Of the Year' awards and all-conference teams will be announced.
