Men's Basketball Takes Overtime Victory From Erskine 71-70

DUE WEST, South Carolina - The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team defeated the Flying Fleet of Erskine College 71-70 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action. UMO improves to 5-4, 1-2 on the season, while Erskine falls to 3-6, 1-3.

GAME INFORMATION
Mount Olive continued its momentum from a road victory against UNC-Pembroke by grasping an overtime win with 30 seconds left in overtime in Due West, S.C.

INSIDE THE SCORE
Mount Olive fell behind early as Erskine scored the first five points of the contest before Darius Spragley made a three-point jumper to stop the momentum. The Flying Fleet remained in the lead until the 13:30 mark when Calvin Washington made a layup to give the Trojans a 17-16 lead. The overall lead exchanged hands several times throughout the first half with neither team holding more than a six-point advantage. Mount Olive had a 39-35 lead with 2:22 left before the break, but Erskine ended on a seven-point run to regain the lead 42-39 going into halftime.

The Flying Fleet continued their run from the first half by adding four more points to their lead before the Trojans were finally able to stop the run with nine unanswered points that ended at the 13:24 mark and the game was tied at 48. The game for the remainder of the half became a back-and-forth battle with the two teams exchanging leads of no more than two. Erskine held a lead of 64-62 with 1:16, but a costly foul put Michael Brown on the free-throw line and he hit both shots to tie the game for the final time and force overtime.

In overtime, Erskine got the first points and the teams once again started to exchange shots. The Flying Fleet hit a layup with 1:58 remaining to take a 70-69 lead but it did not last as Alan Treakle found an open shot with 26 seconds left and gave Mount Olive a 71-70 lead. The Flying Fleet were able to get a shot off as time expired but it was off the mark and UMO took the win.

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
The Trojans were led by Darius Spragley with 24 points. Close on his heals was Johnny Hughes III with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Calvin Washington also added double-digit points with 11.

ERSKINE LEADERS
The Flying Fleet were led by Jordan Watson with a team-high 17 points.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the final seconds of the game when Alan Treakle scored on a jumper to win for UMO.

Mount Olive returns home to Kornegay Arena as they will host Limestone College. UMO and Limestone will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 PM in a Conference Carolinas contest.
