Nick Adams and Sebastian Andersen tied for seventh out of 123 golfers as University of Mount Olive tied for eighth out of 22 teams at the McDonough Cup at Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, Fla. Adams and Andersen both tied for the second lowest 54-hole score in school history and the Trojans set a school record for the lowest 54-hole team score.
The tournament, hosted by Rollins College, began Monday and concluded Tuesday. Day two began with the final three holes of the second round after play had to be halted Monday due to darkness. The third round immediately followed.
Adams (68-72) and Andersen (69-71) began the day tied for eighth at 4-under-par 140. Both players carded matching 1-under-par 71's Tuesday to finish 5-under-par at 211, only five strokes out of first place. Andersen recorded perhaps the most consistent round of the day with 17 pars and a birdie on the 380-yard par-4 13th hole.
Liam McAnally (77-73-72--222) tied for 72nd after carding an even-par 72 Tuesday. Brady Hollenbacher (67-79-78--224) tied for 80th and John Thatch (77-73-75--225) tied for 87th. Hollenbacher's first-round 67 is tied for the second lowest 18-hole score in Trojan history.
Mount Olive carded a 7-under-par 281 in the opening round and followed with a 1-under-par 289 in the second round and again in the third round for a 5-under-par 859, five strokes better than the previous school record.
Mount Olive's performance in this year's McDonough Cup marks the third season in a row the Trojans have set a team 54-hole record. The Trojans shot an 864 last March at the Lander Bearcat Golf Classic during the 2014-15 season and carded an 871 two seasons ago at the 2013 McDonough Cup.
The Trojans finished only eight shots out of second place in the tournament, which featured 11 teams ranked in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Men's Golf Top 25 Poll, along with six teams that received votes in the poll. In addition, five tournament participants are ranked among the top six in the Golfstat Division II Rankings, including the Nos. 1 and 2 teams.
Mount Olive beat out four national top 25 teams. Lynn University (Fla.) shot a 19-under-par 269 in the third round to win going away by 15 strokes.
This week's tournament concluded Mount Olive's fall schedule. The Trojans resume play in February.
