Mount Olive Opens Up Season With 18-4 Win Over Young Harris

Daniel Shields scores five goals as the University of Mount Olive defeated Young Harris College 18-4 in non-conference men's lacrosse in their season opener Saturday afternoon in Young Harris, Ga.

Mount Olive (1-0) got on the board first and never looked back as Alex Tindall scored off the assist from Cameron Walsh with 13:15.

Trojan brother duo of Matt Shields and D. Shields combined for three goals and two assists in the first period as Mount Olive unloaded their offense arsenal and went on a 7-0 run. Young Harris (1-1) got on the board with under a minute to go as Tyler Price slung in a shot with :57 to go in the first period.

The Mountain Lions scored in the opening minutes of the second period with Mason McBroom's shot going in at 13:04 bringing Young Harris a little bit closer at 7-2.

The Shields brothers again helped push Mount Olive further into the lead as they scored collectively three times over nine minutes. Spencer Gelinas also had a mark in the second period to push the Trojans into the break 11-3.

Mount Olive controlled the third period as they were the only ones to score. Five different Trojan players scored in the period. Cameron Walsh scored to open the period with 14:06 remaining. Tindall, D.Shields, Stephen Bowlan and Vincent Cardella followed him as the Trojan lead extended to 13.

The final goals for the Trojans came from Gelinas and D. Shields in the fourth period.

Defensively, Dylan Hickey and James DiMartino combined for 12 of the Trojans 39 groundballs. In goal Ross Bowman finished with six saves.

The Trojan outshot Young Harris 39-24 and put the pressure on goal as they 26 shots on goal to the Mountain Lions 10. The Trojans also won the face-off battle 14-11.

Mount Olive returns to action next Saturday as they open up at home against Catawba at Amon Field match time is set for 2 p.m.
