Matt Shields scores four goals but it was not enough to defeat Wingate University in triple overtime in non-conference men's lacrosse Saturday afternoon in Wingate, N.C.
The Bulldogs (2-0) got on the board first as Bryce Sneed scored the unassisted opening goal with 13:56 remaining in the first period.
Mount Olive (2-1) answered with two goals by Spencer Gelinas and Ryan Morris at the 11:31 and 7:20 marks respectively. Both goals were unassisted.
Wingate tied the game off Steen Swedstedt's goal with under five minutes to go.
Shields scored his scored goal with six seconds on the clock in the first period as Mount Olive lead by two.
The Trojans controlled the second period as they took over offensively shutting out Wingate. Mount Olive put up five goals in the second period. Two came from Alex Tindall and Dan Shields, Morris, and Stephan Bowlan all had one apiece to put UMO up 9-2.
In the third period the Bulldogs put up four goals to the Trojans two. Mount Olive opened the second half with M. Shields' goal off the Cameron Walsh assist with 13:52 to go in the third. Wingate put two straight goals in the net as Ryan Vorgrig scored and Tanner Kotch used a man-up opportunity to bring the Bulldogs closer at 10-4.
Jake Hancock added another unassisted Trojan goal in the third as the clock hit 6:41. Wingate ended the period with two goals from Vinny Aiello with 6:23 and Austin Murphy with four seconds left as they inched closer, Mount Olive was still in the lead 11-6.
The fourth period told it all as Wingate came out hot. The Bulldogs scored four goals in under four minutes to get the score to within one. Murphy scored in the opening seconds of the period as his goal at 14:53 hit the back of the net. Cory Schumacher scored with 13:05 to go in the game and Zak Goings came over a minute later at 12:13 with his goal. The final goal came again from Murphy with 11:21 to go in the game and it brought the game to 11-10 the Trojan lead.
M. Shields gave Mount Olive a two goal cushion with under ten to play but Wingate was not through yet. Keith Norman came in off the Chase Watts assist and scored with 7:41 to go in the fourth period. Murphy scored the tying goal with 6:37 as Wingate came all the way back from an early eight goal lead in the third.
Nico Shewey scored for the Trojans to put them back on top with 4:46 left, however it did not last. Murphy tallied his fifth goal of the contest to knot the game up again.
M. Shields broke the tie once more with 2:18 left on an unassisted goal and it looked as though Mount Olive had finally pulled away.
Kevin Norman scored the third fourth period tying goal with just eleven seconds in the game and an incredible match-up needed overtime.
However, not just one but three overtimes were needed before the game winning goal was registered although it was not for the visiting Trojans as Norman scored the winning goal with eight seconds left in the third overtime frame.
Defensively for Mount Olive, Ross Bowman led the team with six of the team's forty groundballs. In goal he also had 16 saves on the losing end.
M. Shields had the team high with four goals. Morris, Tindall, and Bowlan finshed with two goals as well. Gelinas had the team high with two assists.
The loss is the first for Mount Olive. The Trojans will return to action next week as they travel to play Coker in Hartsville, S.C. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
