Matt Shields Sets UMO Single-Game Goal Record In Regular Season Finale With 20-3 Win At Walsh

Matt Shields broke the school single-game goal record as he found the back of the net eight times in University of Mount Olive's 20-3 win over Walsh University Saturday at North Canton, Ohio. The offensive attack was spread out as 11 Trojans scored.

Walsh got the opening goal with 8:45 left in the first period as Mason Axline found the net off the assist from Ian Maurer.

Mount Olive (12-2) quickly scored to even the score as Matt Shields scored his first of eight goals with 7:33 to go in the first. The Trojans went on a 9-0 run in which Matt Shields scored five of those goals as well as goals by Daniel Shields, Maxwell Bonetti, Spencer Gelinas, and Brett Kingston all adding a goal apiece.

Maurer stopped the run by the Trojans with his goal in the second period with just over a minute left.

Mount Olive returned fire with a 6-0 run and with 12:26 remaining in the third period, Matt Shields jumped over his Brother Daniel Shields who held the record with seven goals back on Feb. 16, 2013 vs. Young Harris the opening game of the Men's Lacrosse program.

Bryan Crim scored the final goal for Walsh (2-6) but the Trojans finished the match with a 5-0 run to close out the match. Rob Thomas, Jesse Mitchell, Ryan Morris, and Nico Shewey were the other Trojans to score as the offensive was truly spread out.

Defensively for the visiting Trojans, Tyler Feniello led the team in groundballs with five and was 10-15 on face-offs. Curtis McMullen had the team high with two caused turnovers and also had two groundballs. In goal for UMO Dorian Gabrek allowed three goals, and had 10 saves.

Mount Olive out shot Walsh 47-32. The Trojans made their opportunities with an extra man on the field as they were 4-5 whereas Walsh was unable to make any opportunities.

The win was the final game of the 2014 regular season as the Trojans await seeding for the Conference Carolinas Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The tournament is set to begin April 23 through the 27. The semifinals are hosted by the higher seeds, Mount Olive currently sits at second in Conference Carolinas standings.
