Trojans Defeat Catawba 11-10 In Men's Lacrosse Season Opener

Matt Shields scored the game-winning goal with 49 seconds left as University of Mount Olive rallied for an 11-10 victory over Catawba College in non-conference men's lacrosse Wednesday at Salisbury, N.C. The contest was the season opener for both teams.

Mount Olive (1-0) trailed 9-7 when the Trojans tied the game on a pair of goals in a span of 81 seconds. Matt Shields scored with 38 seconds left in the third period and Brett Kingston tied the game 43 seconds into the fourth period. Alex Tindall's goal with 12:11 left in the contest put the Trojans on top 10-9.

Catawba (0-1) tied the game on Dalton Cook's goal with 8:43 remaining. The contest remained knotted until Shields' game winner, his fourth goal of the game. Kingston also scored four goals for the Trojans. Jake Duarte recorded three assists in his first game since missing all of 2014 with an injury.

Goals by Duarte and Kingston gave Mount Olive a 2-1 lead after one period, but Catawba rallied to take a 6-5 lead at the half.

Ross Bowman recorded nine saves in goal for the Trojans.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to nationally eighth-ranked Mercyhurst in a non-conference match-up. Game time is noon at Amon Field.
