No. 11 Mount Olive Defeats Lynn University 16-4 Saturday Night

Matt Shields scored three goals as the No. 11 University of Mount Olive defeated Lynn University 16-4 in non-conference men's lacrosse in Boca Raton, Fla. Saturday night. Four Trojans scored two goals apiece in the contest.

Mount Olive (9-2) got on the board first as Jake Duarte scored the first goal of the game and put Mount Olive up with 12:29 left in the first quarter.

Lynn (7-3) responded and took the lead after back-to-back goals by Anthony Rainone with under four minutes left in the first quarter. Mount Olive tied the game with a goal from Stephen Bowlan with :34 remaining. Lynn regained the lead as Rainone scored his third goal just before the horn sounded and the Fighting Knights led 3-2.

The Trojans controlled the second quarter as Nico Shewey's shot from Brett Kingston found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity to tie the game. Mount Olive went on to score four more goals to Lynn's one. Bowlan's goal at the 7:52 mark ended up being the game-winning goal. The final shot of the first half came to a close as Shields scored with eight seconds left and Mount Olive led at the half 7-4.

Shields opened up the third quarter with a goal at the 13:49 mark and started an 9-0 run by Mount Olive to close out the game and take the victory on the road.

Ross Bowman (9-2) was solid in goal for the Trojans as he allowed four goals on 13 shots, nine saves, and had eight ground balls. Tyler Feniello also assisted the defense with eight groundballs as well.

Mount Olive moves to 5-1 on the road and will return home to Amon Field Wednesday April, 1 to take on Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer at 4 p.m.
