13th-Ranked Trojans Slip Past NGU in Overtime

Mount Olive, N.C. – The 13th-ranked University of Mount Olive men's lacrosse team slipped past North Greenville Univeristy, 5-4 in overtime, in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened

FIRST QUARTER

  • North Greenville opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first five minutes that put the Crusaders up 2-0 with 10:54 left in the first quarter.
  • The Trojans scored their first goal with 7:49 left in the opening frame as junior Cody Graden found the back of the net off an assist by senior Brett Kingston.
  • The Crusaders pushed their lead back to two at 3-1 with a goal with just 3:47 left on the clock in the quarter.
  • Mount Olive got back within a goal with 1:20 remaining in the opening quarter as freshman Tim Collins scored on an assist by Kingston.

SECOND QUARTER

  • UMO tied the match at three with 4:29 left in the half on an unassisted goal by sophomore Thatcher Clark.
  • In the final seconds of the half, freshman Gunner Parson pushed the Trojans ahead, 4-3, with an unassisted goal with just nine seconds remaining in the quarter.

THIRD QUARTER

  • A defensive third quarter featured a combined 13 shots and eight saves, but neither the Trojans nor Crusaders were able to score.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • North Greenville tied the game at four with 8:06 left in regulation.
  • Both teams combined for 10 shots in the final eight minutes, but could not score as the game moved on to overtime.

OVERTIME

  • Mount Olive wasted little time in overtime as the Trojans grabbed the faceoff and made their way down the field where junior Luke Dalman scored the game-winner off an assist by Clark just 1:03 into the overtime period.

KEY STATS

  • Junior Will Urban (6-2) earned the win in goal, making 14 saves, allowing just four goals.
  • Five different Trojans scored in the win with Graden taking a team-high five shots on goal.

NOTABLES

  • The win is the 50th in program history for the Trojans in just five seasons of existence.
