No. 16 Mount Olive Men's Lacrosse Upsets No. 11 Saint Leo 12-9

Mount Olive, N.C. – The 16th-ranked University of Mount Olive men's lacrosse team took down the No. 11 Saint Leo University Lions 12-9 in non-conference competition Saturday afternoon at the Ray McDonald Sr Track and Field/Lacrosse Complex.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

FIRST QUARTER

  • Mount Olive struck first in the game as Jacob Ball scored with 11:19 on the clock to give UMO the early lead.
  • Three Saint Leo penalties with 7:07 remaining in the quarter, gave the Trojans a three-man up power-play and Tyler Keele executed the opportunity to perfection scoring with 6:38 on the clock.
  • The Lions fought back with a goal with 5:49 left as Kyle Pauwels brought the deficit to 2-1.
  • Thatcher Clark three minutes later added another UMO goal to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead.
  • Saint Leo took the Trojans' lead back to one with a Matt Shand goal and UMO led 3-2 going into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Brody Sullivan started Mount Olive off with a goal 38 seconds into the quarter to extend the lead back to two. 
  • The Lions countered with a goal at the 13:25 mark and The Trojans held a slim 4-3 lead.
  • Keele picked up his second goal of the game at the 11:18 mark and at the subsequent face-off Peyton Bickford not only won the face-off but scored all within 10 seconds as UMO jumped out to a 6-3 lead. 
  • UMO went on to score two more goals in the quarter and went into the break up 8-4.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Tim Collins and Jacob Ball scored the only two goals in the third quarter that saw Saint Leo out-score the Trojans 3-to-2 and Mount Olive 10-7.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • The final quarter Mount Olive and Saint Leo exchanged goals but UMO drained the clocked and held on to take down the Lions 12-9.

KEY STATS

  • Ball led the Trojans with three goals.
  • Between the posts, Will Urban (W: 4-1) took the win, making 14 saves on 23 shots.
