Mount Olive, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive fell to Catawba College 2-1 in overtime in the Trojans home-opener in non-conference men's soccer Wednesday night.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

First Half

  • Mount Olive and Catawba finished the first half in a stalemate as both teams went into the break with five shots and no goals.

Second Half

  • Catawba in the 55th minute found the game's first goal. Tyus Lopez was fed a pass from Daniele Proch and was able to beat the Trojan keeper with a one-touch shot into the far post.
  • UMO caught a break as freshman Anthony Wren was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Stefan Faria took the penalty kick attempt and snuck a ball by the Indians keeper as his shot deflected off the keeper's outstretched hands and rolled into the back corner.
  • Mount Olive had four shots in the final nine minutes of regulation but could not find the back of the net.

1st Overtime

  • Both teams were again in a stalemate until the 98th minute in extra time. Proch challenged for a ball inside the box with the Trojans keeper and after being taken down was awarded a penalty kick. The kick was on target and Catawba snuck past Mount Olive.

Key Stats

  • Faria led the Trojans offensively with four shots, two on goal, and had the lone goal for UMO
  • Freshman Dakotah Casale was just behind Faria with three shots and freshman Jonathan Alexandersson and senior Dauda Sanoh both contributed two shots.
  • In goal, senior Nick Bernsdorf collected three saves and surrendered two goals off five shots.
