Men's Soccer Wins 5-3 Thriller Over King

Bristol, Tenn. - The University of Mount Olive scored three goals in the final three minutes to take a 5-3 victory over King University in Conference Carolinas men's soccer Saturday afternoon in Bristol, Tenn. The win marked the Trojans first win on the year the first for 1st-year head coach Sean Brennan.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

First Half

  • King got on the board first as Ryan Murphy in the 18th minute scored off a keeper save and the Tornado took the lead.
  • Mount Olive countered as Jonathan Alexandersson in the 19th minute settled a ball down and placed the equalizing goal into the bottom right corner of the goal.
  • The Tornado did not let the tie game stay for long as Luis Calderon put a shot home to regain the lead for King 2-1.
  • The opening half ended with King out-shooting the Trojans 11-to-5.

Second Half 

  • The second period remained quiet until, in the 64th minute, a King player received a red card and was sent off forcing the Tornado to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
  • Mount Olive took advantage of the man-up opportunity in the 75th minute as Lewis Xiberras struck for goal from 20 yards out and beat the King keeper to knot the game at two.
  • King wasted no time putting the pressure on Mount Olive 28 seconds later as Calderon put in his second goal of the game to tie the game once again.
  • The Trojans in the 89th minute were pressuring the Tornado back line and forced a foul in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Kenneth Gilliam took the shot for UMO and tied the game for the third time.
  • Mount Olive added two more goals to their cushion quickly as Alexandersson scored with 25 seconds remaining and Trevor Knight added a goal with just six seconds left.

Key Stats

  • Jonathan Alexandersson led the Trojans with five shots, four on goal, and two goals. Dakotah Casale, Xiberras, and Knight all contributed two shots apiece with Xiberras and Knight adding a goal. 
  • Freshman Bernardo Mejia (1-1-1) picked up his first collegiate victory in goal for the Trojans as he faced 11 shots on goal and recorded eight saves.

I am proud to be a part of the with these guys today and can only hope this momentum will push us forward throughout the rest of the season," said Head Men's Soccer coach Sean Brennan.
