Mount Olive, N.C. - University of Mount Olive men's soccer team defeated the Lions of Emmanuel College 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action Sunday afternoon at Amon Field.

Play-by-Play

First Half

  • Mount Olive and Emmanuel played it close to the wire for the early part of the first half until a counter-attack in the 24th minute set up UMO for a run.
  • A pass into the box found an open Alfie Pope whose only play was to go airborne and the freshman connected on a bicycle kick into the back corner of the net and put the Trojans ahead 1-0.
  • UMO outshot the Lions 8-to-7 in the opening half and held onto the one-goal lead at the break.

Second Half

  • The Trojans held off a charge from Emmanuel as the Lions flipped the script on Mount Olive outshooting the home 11 by five, 11-to-6, but UMO held on for the win taking its Conference Carolinas opener.

Key Stats

  • Alfie Pope led the Trojans in shots with three, two on goal, and had the game-winner for UMO.
  • Austin Porter (3-1-1, 1-0) had a stellar game in goal collecting nine saves and had a clean sheet for his second shutout of the season.
