Men's Soccer Falls To Limestone In 2OT Penalty Kick Shootout In Quarterfinals Of Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The University of Mount Olive men's soccer team saw it's season come to a close in dramatic fashion as the Trojans fell to top-seeded Limestone College 5-3 via a penalty kick shootout in the Quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Championship Tournament Monday night in Gaffney, S.C.

How It Happened
Play-by-Play

First Half

  • Mount Olive struggled  to get their offense going in the first half as the Trojans failed to record a shot in the opening frame. 
  • The UMO defense did, however, hold off a Limestone Saints attack that launched eight shots in the half but kept LC off the boards heading into the intermission.

Second Half

  • UMO was able to rectify a slow start and register a shot in the second half but was once again unable to put a shot on goal relying on strong defensive play to keep them in the game.
  • The Saints tested the Trojans' keeper with two shots on goal in the second half but neither found the back of the net and extra time was needed.

Overtime

  • The first of the two overtime periods saw Mount Olive finally get it's first shot on goal in the 96th minute on a strike from Eric Healy, but the goal attempt was thwarted and play resumed.
  • Following a stalemate, in the first overtime period, a second set of extra time was called on to try and determine a winner, however, it would not lead to a decision and the two squads headed to a penalty kick shootout.

Penalty Kicks

  • In the shootout, Sam Murphy got Mount Olive off to the right start following a positive attempt by Limestone and knotted the shootout at one.
  • The Saints continued with a goal on their second penalty kick attempt moving to a 2-1 advantage. 
  • After a UMO miss on the Trojans second attempt Limestone went on to make their next three attempts and won the shootout 5-3.
