3rd-Seeded Men's Tennis Bounces Erskine 5-1 In Conference Carolinas Tourney

Nationally 50th-ranked Mount Olive won fourth, fifth and sixth singles to clinch an opening round 5-1 victory over host Erskine in the Conference Carolinas men's tennis championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. Friday morning. With the win, the third-seeded Trojans (13-5) advance to meet second-seeded Limestone in the semifinals.

The Trojans led 2-1 after the doubles competition as top-seeded Edgar Bub and Rik Wolthuis defeated Jack West and Wilson Mathewes 8-5. The Flying Fleet (8-14) evened the match with a close 8-6 win at number two, but Gabriel Santana and Brahm Moolman won number three with ease, 8-1.

In singles, Mount Olive allowed just seven games in sweeping three matches to close out the win.

Akio Mariano defeated Alan Pearce 6-2, 6-2, Stanley Roffe cruised past Robert Clarke 6-1, 6-2, and Moolman swept Aaron Twitty 6-0, 6-0 to advance.

The Trojans will face Limestone Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. During the regular season, Mount Olive fell at Limestone 5-4 in Gaffney, S.C. last week. Three of the nine matches required a tie-breaker.
