Henric Falkenberg and Matt Finnerty posted a win at No. 2 doubles and Edgar Bub East Carolina's No. 1 singles to three sets, but University of Mount Olive fell to the Division I Pirates 7-0 in non-conference men's tennis Sunday at Greenville, N.C. The Trojans' spring season opener was played at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
Falkenberg and Finnerty combined to win their doubles match 8-7, but East Carolina took the other two doubles matches to earn the doubles point. In Division I tennis, a single point is awarded to the team that wins the most doubles matches.
Bub battled back from a 6-4 loss in the first set with a 7-6 win in the second set. ECU's Fredric Lehfeldt won the 10-point pro set 10-1 to win the match. East Carolina (6-1) won the remaining five singles matches in straight sets.
Mount Olive's record is officially 3-1 after winning three dual matches in the fall.
Mount Olive returns to action Friday as the Trojan men's and women's tennis teams travel to Hickory, N.C., to face Lenoir-Rhyne in non-conference contests. Match time is 1:30 p.m. The Trojans have their first home event Sunday against Francis Marion.
