Nationally 30th-ranked University of Mount Olive swept doubles play and Edgar Bub, Matt Finnerty and Henric Falkenberg clinched the team victory with straight-set singles wins as the Trojans defeated No. 38 Limestone 6-3 in Conference Carolinas men's tennis Friday at Gaffney, S.C. The Trojans followed with a 9-0 conference victory against Lees-McRae Saturday at Banner Elk, N.C.
The wins extended Mount Olive's winning streak to eight and kept the Trojans unbeaten against non-Division I teams.
Mount Olive (11-1 overall, 5-0 Conference Carolinas) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Limestone after doubles play. Bub and Rik Wolthuis won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, Finnerty and Falkenberg won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles and Stan Roffe and Paul Wiederspahn won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Bub and Finnerty dropped only three games each at the top two singles flights to secure the team victory. Bub won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Finnerty won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Falkenburg lost only four games in his 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
Limestone (5-4, 2-1) won the final three singles matches to avoid the shutout.
Against Lees-McRae (3-8, 0-4), Mount Olive won all six singles matches in straight sets and lost only seven games in the three doubles matches.
Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans play host to Randolph-Macon in a non-conference contest. Match time is 3 p.m. at Walker Tennis Center.
