Lautaro Vazquez's straight-set win at No. 6 singles clinched the team victory as 28th-ranked University of Mount Olive won a battle of nationally ranked teams and extended its winning streak to 12, defeating No. 34 Wingate 5-4 in non-conference men's tennis Saturday at Walker Tennis Center. The contest was a rematch of the Trojans' first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012.
Mount Olive (15-1) built a 4-2 lead after winning two doubles matches and posting straight-set wins at the top two singles flights. Edgar Bub won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Matt Finnerty posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles. In doubles play, Bub and Rik Wolthuis and Finnerty and Henric Falkenberg recorded matching 8-5 victories.
Vazquez won his first set 6-1 and held on for a 6-4 win in the second set to give the Trojans an insurmountable lead and secure the team victory.
Saturday's contest concluded regular season play for the Trojans. Mount Olive is idle until the 2014 Conference Carolinas Tournament April 25-27 at Sumter, S.C.
