UMO Tennis Wins Seven Individual Championships at PTCI

Sumter, S.C. – The University of Mount Olive men's and women's tennis teams combined to win seven championships and three consolation draws at the Palmetto Tennis Center Invitational in Sumter, South Carolina.

INSIDE THE RESULTS (MEN)

  • The Trojans swept doubles competition taking victories at A, B, and C draws.
  • Senior Martim Sousa and sophomore Jose Cortejos grabbed the win in the A doubles championship with an 8-7 defeat of Pfeiffer.
  • Sophomore Ogulcan Deniz and freshman Jack Middleton topped Barton, 8-4, to earn the B doubles championship.
  • At C doubles, sophomore Jacob Clarke and freshman Juan Arbelaez defeated Barton 8-7.
  • Along with the doubles success, UMO captured a pair of singles titles and a consolation victory.
  • In a tight match, Sousa earned the B singles championship with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 triumph over Pfeiffer's Bjorn Barwinski.
  • At E singles, Middleton topped Southern Wesleyan's Jacob Chesney in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
  • In the C singles consolation final, Clarke earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory over North Greenville's Alex Sanchez.

INSIDE THE RESULTS (WOMEN)

  • In doubles action, Mount Olive took a championship victory and consolation finals victory.
  • Senior Stella Di Michele and sophomore Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez nabbed an 8-3 victory over Emmanuel at A doubles.
  • In the A doubles consolation final, Senior Alejandra Hernandez and junior Jennifer Byrd topped North Greenville 8-6.
  • UMO added to its haul with a championship win and another consolation finals victory in singles competition.
  • In B singles, Gonzalez-Rodriguez powered past Erskine's Molly Polk for a 6-2, 6-2 straight sets triumph.
  • Byrd capped off the weekend with a win in the D singles consolation final over fellow Trojans Nicole La Chappelle, 6-1, 6-4.

COACHES COMMENTS

  • "The Palmetto Tennis Invitational provides us the opportunity play a lot of matches versus conference opponents," said UMO Men's and Women's Tennis head coach Kevin Coghill.  "As a team, we are pleased with our efforts this weekend.  We will take this experience to learn and grow individually and as a team. Success is always due to hard work, focus, and teamwork."

The men's tennis team competes in the Methodist University Fall Men's Tennis Tournament in Fayetteville, N.C. September 23-25, while the women's tennis team is idle this weekend.
