Trojans Defeat Tornado 7-2 In Conference Action

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive men's tennis team defeated the Tornado of King University 7-2 in Conference Carolinas competition at the John Neal Walker Tennis Courts in Mount Olive, N.C.

INSIDE THE RESULTS

  • The Trojans started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches entering the singles bouts with a 2-1 lead.
  • Armando Ferreira and Jack Middleton upheld their perfect record in the No. 1 doubles spot winning 8-6.
  • Martin Moser and Jose Cortijos Planas won the No. 2 doubles game 8-3
  • The No. 3 Trojan pair pf Pablo Safont Ferrer and Juan Arbelaez fell in the No. 3 doubles game 8-4.
  • In singles action, the Trojans won five of the six en route to the 7-2 win over King.
  • Cortijos Planas got the singles action going with a win at No. 3.
  • Safont Ferrer followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 5 position giving UMO a 4-1 lead.
  • Middleton, in the No. 4 slot, clinched the match with his 6-1, 6-1 two-set win, while Moser gave UMO their sixth match point with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position.
  • Ferreira, after dropping the first set, came back to win the No. 1 singles flight in a tiebreaker third set, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), for the 7-1 Mount Olive lead.
  • Sherzod Akramov dropped the No. 6 singles flight to give King their second match point though it was too late for the Tornado who fell 7-2 to the home Trojans.

The Trojans are back in action on March 24 as they host Conference Carolinas opponent Emmanuel College. First serve is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday morning at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center as both the men and women take on the Lions.
