Trojans Defeat Bulldogs 8-1 On Senior Day

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive men's tennis team defeated the Bulldogs of Barton College 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action at the John Neal Walker Tennis Courts in Mount Olive, N.C. Sherzod Akramov, Jacob Clarke, and Jose Cortijos Planas were recognized prior to the match during the senior day ceremony for all of their hard work and dedication to the UMO Men's Tennis Program.

INSIDE THE RESULTS

  • The Trojans came out of the doubles round with a 2-1 lead winning the No. 1 & 2 doubles flights while Barton took the No. 3 flight, the Bulldogs lone point of the match.
  • Mount Olive's duo of Jack Middleton & Armando Ferreira took the win at the No. 1 flight, 8-3, to tie the match at one point per team.
  • Martin Moser & Jose Cortijos Planas took an 8-6 win over Barton's No. 2 pair wrapping up the doubles action.
  • In singles action, Mount Olive completed a clean sweep taking all six singles points to win the match 8-1 overall. The Trojans finishing order went as followed, 1,3,5,2,6,4.
  • Ferreira got the singles action going with a quick win at the No. 1 flight 6-4, 6-2.
  • Cortijos Planas finished up next, taking down his competition in three sets, including a second set tiebreaker, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
  • Pablo Safont Ferrer, playing the No. 5 singles position, won in two sets, having to work for the win as both sets went into a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2). Safont Ferrer's win at the No. 5 spot clinched the five-point minimum need to win a match, as the teams continued to play out the remainder of the sets.
  • Moser cruised to victory in the No. 2 singles flight with a pair of 6-0 wins in straight sets. Sherzod Akramov took an 8-3 pro-set win at the No. 6 singles flight, and Middleton closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 4 position completing the singles round sweep.
