Mount Olive, N.C. - University of Mount Olive men's tennis alumni, Martin Moser, was recently named a recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Each year the NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships to deserving student-athletes to continue their education after the completion of their undergraduate careers. Three times a year the NCAA student-athletes can apply to earn a one-time $10,000 scholarship to apply to their graduate studies.
Moser, who graduated in May, earned a postgrad scholarship following a career that is full of academic and athletic achievements. The Voecklabruck, Austria native culminated his career with Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Organization last month. In addition, he was a two-time CoSIDA First-Team All-District honoree and the Men's Tennis Conference Carolinas Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Moser was the recipient of the inaugural Conference Carolinas Elite 23 award, an award modeled after the NCAA Elite 90 award, which is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the Conference Carolinas Championship site. The Trojan alum finished his undergraduate academic career with a 3.949 in Business Statistics.
Athletically, Moser was named to the Conference Carolinas Men's tennis All-Tournament team and finished the 2019 season with an 11-5 overall record and a 7-2 conference mark in singles action while he went 15-2 and 9-1 in doubles action with partner Pablo Safont Ferrer. He garnered a second-team all-conference nod for his performance on the court this season.
Moser recalled his excitement when receiving the news, "I was completely overwhelmed and excited that I called my parents to tell them the news after receiving the email from the NCAA and a text from Coach Coghill on Monday morning." He continued saying "I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who assisted me throughout the application process and my four years at UMO. Everyone I've met during my experience at Mount Olive has made it unforgettable and I have blessed me with life-long friends around the world! I am honored to receive this scholarship as it will be a great help and motivation for me to pursue my Master's degree in Data Science at the University of Salzburg in Austria."
Dr. Brenda Cates, professor of Mathematics at the University of Mount Olive, played a major role in the process of Martin's nomination. "As the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR), I am privileged to work with student-athletes like Martin who exemplify the Division II Life in the Balance philosophy," said Dr. Cates. "I am very proud of Martin's many accomplishments in the classroom, on the tennis court, and in service to the UMO campus and community. He is an exceptionally talented young man and extremely deserving of this honor."
Coach Kevin Coghill shared his excitement as well, "We are very proud of Martin for receiving the NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship. Not only has he been a highly awarded athlete, he has been a stellar student. Martin will always be a role model every student/athlete here at UMO can look up to. We expect more great thing to come from Martin in the future."
Martin is the second Trojan since the 2015-16 academic year to earn the NCAA Postgraduate scholarship. He joins Michael Munoz who earned the award in the fall of 2015.
