SUMTER, South Carolina - The University of Mount Olive men's tennis team also sent four athletes down to Sumter, SC, for the ITA Southeast Regional Small College/Oracle Championships.
TROJAN LEADERS
In the men's open singles Christian Djonov and Milosh Petrovic uprooted both their opponents on day one of the tournament. Djonov beat out King's Arturo Alfaro 6-2, 6-3 and then downed Young Harris's Miguel Danelon 6-2, 6-3 as well. Petrovic opened the tournament by defeating Catawba's Jack Joel in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. He then beat Wingate's Tolunay Sumer, also in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Both Djonov and Petrovic continue tomorrow in the championship bracket to advance to the round of 16 and then the quarterfinals after that.
Armando Ferreira won his opening bout 6-1, 7-6 (5), over Sebastian Meum from Queens, but then fell in round two to the University of North Georgia's Ryan Gaskin in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Ferreira will move on to the consolation brackets tomorrow.
Paul Sitkiewiez dropped his opening bout to SWU's Sarvesh Maria in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. He will continue in the consolation rounds tomorrow as well.
The doubles pair of Djonov and Sitkiewiez defeated their opening round opponents of Connelly/Grunert from GA College 6-1. Petrovic and Ferreira received a first-round bye as the number three seeded duo in the tournament.
