Men's Volleyball Wraps Up Weekend Action

Santa Barbara, Calif. – The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team dropped a trio of matches in the UCSB Asics Invitational to open the 2017 season.

#9 Stanford

  • Mount Olive battled back in the first set down two to tie the set at 2-2, however, Stanford pushed three unanswered points to regain the lead for good. Three points was as close as the Trojans got as the Cardinal took the first set.
  • The second set was played close as UMO took the lead 3-1. Stanford tied the match three more times before Mount Olive went on a three-point run to lead 10-7. The Cardinal responded with an 8-0 run to take control of the set.
  • In the final set, Stanford utilized a 4-0 & a 3-0 run early on to take a 12-6 lead, one the Trojans were unable to recover from.

#12 UC Santa Barbara

  • UC Santa Barbara took control from the opening serve gathering the first two points of the match and did not allow the Trojans within a pair for the remainder of the set.
  • The second set saw UMO battle back from a 4-2 deficit to take a 6-5 lead off a three-point run. USCB tied the set three times on a 7-2 run to take the lead back 14-10. The Trojans then went on a run of their own taking six of the next seven points to go back on top 16-15. The set then was tied at 20 and the two teams exchanged pairs of points until UMO took the set on kills by Alex Palmatier and Jeff Yasalonis.
  • In the third set, UMO tied the score five times early on but was unable to take the lead as USCB took the set 25-15.
  • In the final set, the Trojans had a spark down 16-11. Palmatier picked up a kill that began a 6-0 run to give UMO a 17-16 lead. The Gauchos, however, did regain the lead on a two-point swing following a 19-19 tie and took the set 25-22.

#14 Cal State Northridge

  • UMO had the lead in the beginning of the set holding a 5-4 lead before CSUN went on a five-point run to regain the lead 9-5. The Trojans were unable to battle back and dropped the first set.
  • The second set saw CSUN take an early 3-0 lead before UMO picked up its first point. The lead expanded however to 11-5 and Mount Olive was only able to shrink the deficit to 14-11 before the Matadors took the set 25-19.
  • The Trojans led three times during the final set but could not hold the lead.

  • Jeff Yasalonis also led the Trojans with 29 assists.

  • Bret Rutledge led the team with 10 kills and also had four digs.
