Misenheimer, N.C.. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team opened Conference Carolinas play with a three-set sweep of Pfeiffer University, 25-15, 25-17, 25-15, on Tuesday evening in Misenheimer, N.C.

FIRST SET

  • UMO asserted its dominance early as the Trojans charged out to a 13-2 lead that prompted a Pfeiffer timeout.
  • The Trojans did not relent as they built a 17-5 advantage before Pfeiffer began to chip away.
  • The Falcons got within nine on three separate occasions but could draw no closer in UMO's 25-15 set victory.
  • Mount Olive outhit Pfeiffer .333 to .118 in the first set.

SECOND SET

  • Unlike the opening stanza, the Falcons were able to keep pace with UMO through the first few points as the Trojans held a narrow 6-5 lead.
  • Mount Olive extended its lead to 16-7 on a 6-2 run to take control of the set.
  • Pfeiffer attempted to make a late comeback with a 3-0 run that cut the Trojans' advantage to 21-15, but UMO pushed forward for a 25-17 set win.

THIRD SET

  • Pfeiffer stayed on the Trojans' heels through the first 17 points as UMO held just a 10-7 lead.
  • UMO quickly countered with a 7-3 run to earn what proved to be an insurmountable lead in route to a 25-15 set victory and a three-set sweep.

KEY STATS

  • For the third time in four matches, junior Robert Poole led the Trojans with 14 kills on 25 total attacks for a .440 hitting percentage. 
  • Senior Alex Palmatier amassed eight kills with a .636 hitting percentage along with four block assists.
  • Leading the Trojans in assists and digs was junior Jeff Yasalonis who tallied 16 assists and six digs.
  • UMO hit a season-high .484 for the match to Pfeiffer's .228.
